Max-Planck-Institut
The Max Planck Institute for Biology of Ageing, as part of a life science cluster on the campus of the University of Cologne, is researching the enigma of ageing: Why do people age at all? What are the influencing factors? And how can susceptibility to disease be explained and minimised?
Researchers from over thirty nations want to unravel these mysteries and uncover the underlying molecular, physiological and evolutionary mechanisms.
Three departments and five research groups work in the new institute building on 4,500 square metres of laboratory space. Communication and interaction are at the centre of the new, very transparent laboratory building. There are many meetingareas and communication zones. In general, the building is designed to support and promote teamwork in order to encourage dialogue between scientists.
The research and speciality laboratories are located on four floors and are equipped with table-top fume cupboards and integrated airflow and sliding window controllers, among other things. The ageing process can be studied using model organisms such as mice, fruit flies and threadworms. That is why there is a floor reserved for animals. The fly kitchen, for example, is fully equipped in stainless steel. Complete rinsing laboratories and radionuclide laboratories are also set up in this new laboratory building.
